Ariege is a wonderful area of France to explore because of its beautiful landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The area is strewn with picturesque villages and towns such as Mirepoix and Foix and the rocky ruins of Cathar castles such as Montsegur, Roquefixade or Puivert.

The beauty of this region is that there really is something for everyone. Less than five minutes drive away is Lac de Montbel. This lake has two well-appointed swimming areas, several cafes and a lovely walk around its perimeter that offers some stunning vistas. There is also bike, canoe, boat hire and sailing on offer.

The hamlet of Canterate is linked to a series of local and national walking and cycling routes. You can visit the two closest villages Chalabre and Camon by following these. There are also many other footpaths and cycle tracks nearby, including a facinating walk through a labyrinth forest in Nebias.

Further afield, the World Heritage site of Carcassonne, with its picture postcard castle and the prehistoric cave at Niaux are both worthy of a day's visit.

There many local events, especially in the summer months, and Canterate, being on the border of both Ariege and Aude, means that you can enjoy the benefit of both regions. Throughout the year there are numerous fetes, musical and theatrical events that celebrate the area's rich culture. There are a variety of markets that sell local products and crafts. Bargains can also be found at the regular vide greniers (attic and brocante sales).

There are also many attractions for children to visit such the medieval theme park at Chateau Chalabre and numerous adventure and play parks.

Finally, for the more energetically inclined of our visitors, the area offers a host of activities ranging from white water rafting to rock climbing, horse riding and skiing.
